Actor Eric Dane, recognized for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Euphoria, has died at the age of 53, his family confirmed, after a battle against ALS.

His passing comes nearly a year after he publicly announced his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Eric Dane passed away on Thursday, February 19.

In a statement, his family shared that he died “after a courageous battle with ALS” and spent his final days surrounded by close friends, his wife, and his daughters, Billie and Georgia.

During his illness, the actor became an advocate for ALS awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same condition.

Born in San Francisco in 1972, Eric Dane rose to worldwide fame in 2006 when he portrayed Dr. Mark Sloan, famously known as “McSteamy,” on Grey’s Anatomy.

The character debuted in the show’s second season and, due to overwhelming audience response, became part of the main cast.

After leaving the series in 2012, he appeared in productions such as The Last Ship and, more recently, in Euphoria, where he played Cal Jacobs, a complex character that marked a new stage in his career.

He also acted in films including Valentine’s Day, Marley & Me, Burlesque, and Bad Boys: Ride or Die.

In 2004, he married actress Rebecca Gayheart.

The couple had two daughters, Billie and Georgia. Although Gayheart filed for divorce in 2018, in March 2025 she requested the dismissal of the proceedings.

Throughout his life, Dane spoke openly about his personal struggles, including his battle with depression and addiction.

In his final years, he focused much of his energy on his family and on raising awareness about ALS, using his platform to shed light on the disease during his battle.

Eric Dane leaves behind a legacy defined by iconic television and film characters, as well as a message of resilience in the face of adversity.
